Recently, as I looked back on all my cartoon avatars I've done over the past year or so, I realized I wasn't really happy with most of them. Something about the style bothered me.

In order to turn them around quickly (they're only $25, after all), I generally start with a quick tracing sketch from the actual photo. From there, I ink and color. But what often strikes me is how little the finished piece really captures the look of the person. It makes no sense, but sometimes even an exact tracing just doesn't capture it.

So I wanted to work on a style that's more "cartoony", without going full-on caricature. In this comparison, the more realistic version is on the left, with a looser version on the right. The looser version was also sketched on paper and scanned.

I may give customers a choice of the two, and maybe charge a few bucks more for the cartoony version. I still want to offer zombie versions, but let's not get ahead of ourselves :)

Thanks! Frankly, it's gotten kind of a weak response. I did this alternate version for practice, and sent it to the customer to use for free. He liked it, but still preferred the first version. I also sent the comparison to someone that just ordered an avatar, and he chose the more "realistic" version. Both people said they wanted it to look more like them. I guess that's what people are looking for in an avatar.

There loss. Both are great styles but I prefer the more "cartoon" look. I think it has more creativity and expression to it. Keep up the great work.

I prefer the 'cartoony' version. it is more interesting. Zombie version would be awesome!
